Interesting Facts: sea otters

Sea otters are abundant in Alaskan Coastal Waters; especially in Kachemak Bay and Bear Cove. Below are some interesting facts about sea otters that will help you prepare for a trip to Bear Cove:

1 - sea otters have been reported to dive up to 330 feet (100 meters) below the surface in search of food! This is one reason we set our crab pots in 400 to 600 feet of water : )

2 - sea otters have the densest fur in the animal kingdom with up to one million hairs per square inch of their body to keep them warm in the frigid North Pacific (no blubber like other marine mammals).

3 - They are one of the only animals aside from humans known to use tools. They use rocks as anvils which they place on their chest to crack open crustaceans, such as clams and mussels.
