What to expect at Bear Cove Retreat in June?

  • Highs in the upper 50’s F, lows in the 40’s F

  • June is also one of the two driest months of the year on average.

  • If you want to be here for the Summer Solstice, book early, it is a coveted week.

  • We are still fishing halibut in shallower water in early June. We start moving out to various humps in the bay and to the southern end of the Kenai Peninsula to 100-200 feet of water as the month progresses.

  • King salmon (chinook) can still be found around Seldovia early in the month.

  • Some years there are king salmon hanging out within 2 miles of Bear Cove Retreat in June. On calm evenings, it is worth dropping a line while out on a cruise around the bay enjoying wine and appetizers on the FoxSea RoxSea. This is also a good time for Charlotte and Otto to join us for your excursion with them, great time to hear stories as you pass by Kachemak Bay landmarks.

  • We usually start seeing red (sockeye) and pink (humpies) salmon jumping in bear cove in late June, very entertaining while enjoying a coffee on the pier.

  • Kayaking and hiking are good this time of year. If you are up for a challenge, the Grace Ridge trail is a great June experience!

  • Bears can be found on the coast, as well as, moving up the hills looking for early berries. It is not uncommon to cross paths with black bear on hikes this time of year.

  • Sea otters, river otters, harbor seals, bald eagles…are all around us in June. Great opportunity to get some pictures from the retreat.

Excellent 26# halibut near Anchor Point!
