July and August tend to be a little wetter than the early part of the summer, we will push through it for our excursions if the wind is manageable. We strongly encourage brining raingear you are comfortable hiking and kayaking in if you plan to do those activities. You can escape the elements while on the boats, both have cabins that get you out of the elements.
We fish halibut on various humps in Kachemak Bay and continue to venture south to the end of the Kenai Peninsula in July. We tend to fish in 100-300 feet of water in July. It will be a workout getting halibut off the bottom in these depths. Make sure you eat all of your breakfast before heading out fishing in July, you will need the fuel.
When venturing south, we will try our luck finding rock fish. Their filets are actually preferred over all other species found in AK by several folks who have visited in the past.
King salmon can be found around Halibut Cove the first half of July. A fun action packed day in this window is a hike up to the Glacier Lake followed by a few hours of trolling for kings.
Some years there are king salmon hanging out within 2 miles of Bear Cove Retreat in July. On calm evenings, it is worth dropping a line while out on a cruise around the bay enjoying wine and appetizers on the FoxSea RoxSea. This is also a good time for Charlotte and Otto to join us for your excursion with them, great time to hear stories as you pass by Kachemak Bay landmarks.
Red (sockeye) and pink (hump back) salmon are jumping in bear cove throughout July. If you are into harvesting fish, you can take a crack at snagging them off the float.
Throughout July red (sockeye) salmon are flooding into China Poot. Visitors can snag the salmon in the salt water before they enter the river. If you are looking for a very unique experience and want build up your fish supply for the winter, this is right up your alley.
Kayaking and hiking are very good this time of year. This is an excellent time to hike up to the Glacier Lake and paddle near the face of the Grewingk Glacier. There tends to be a lot of ice bergs floating around the lake in July.
Bears can be found foraging for berries in July. It is important that you make noise on hikes and be “bear aware”.
Sea otters, river otters, harbor seals, bald eagles…are all around us in July. Great opportunity to get some pictures from the retreat.
