What to expect at Bear Cove Retreat in September?

  • Highs in the mid 50’s F, lows in the lower 40’s F

  • September is on average the wettest month of our season. Again, we will push through it for our excursions if the wind is manageable. We strongly encourage bringing raingear you are comfortable hiking and kayaking in if you plan to do those activities. You can escape the weather while on the boats, both have cabins that get you out of the elements.

  • Lucas actually finds September to be the most productive time of year for fishing. We continue targeting halibut and salmon each day we head out fishing. We typically catch king salmon in September, the runs of the other species have tapered off by this time of year.

  • When fishing this area we will be out in the middle of the bay roughly 40 miles from Bear Cove. We will be exposed to larger seas. For those that tend to get sea sick, make sure to pack Dramamine to help hedge against being nauseous.

  • Hiking conditions are generally good with the exception of the trails getting a bit muddy. A solid hiking shoe/boot with good treads are important for hiking. This is still a good time to hike and kayak to the glacier. Below is a picture from September.

  • Bears seem to be in higher elevations this time of year, less time on the coast. That said, they still show up now and then.

  • Sea otters, river otters, harbor seals, bald eagles…are all around us in September. Eagles are actually more abundant in Bear Cove. Still a great opportunity to get some wildlife pictures from the retreat.

“Something is happening here!!” Great day on the water with the family.
