Highs in the lower 60’s F, lows in the upper 40’s F
Again, July and August tend to be a little wetter than the early part of the summer, we will push through it for our excursions if the wind is manageable. We strongly encourage brining raingear you are comfortable hiking and kayaking in if you plan to do those activities. You can escape the weather while on the boats, both have cabins that get you out of the elements.
In August we have an area we can target halibut and salmon. If the conditions are right we can target both at the same time. This is generally a productive time of the year for fishing. We should be able to find king, silver and pink salmon in August.
When fishing this area we will be out in the middle of the bay roughly 40 miles from Bear Cove. We will be exposed to larger seas. For those that tend to get sea sick, make sure to pack Dramamine to help hedge against being nauseous.
Evening wine and appetizer cruises around the head of the bay continue to be very enjoyable in August.
Silvers (coho), reds (sockeye) and pink (hump back) salmon are still traveling through Bear Cove in August. Alaska residents can partake in a salmon netting season in mid-August throughout Bear Cove.
Kayaking and hiking conditions continue to be very good this time of year. This is an excellent time to hike up to the Glacier Lake and paddle near the face of the Grewingk Glacier.
Bears can be found foraging for berries in August. It is important that you make noise on hikes and be “bear aware”.
Sea otters, river otters, harbor seals, bald eagles…are all around us in August. Great opportunity to get some pictures from the retreat.
